Farms
Producing island farmsBurnside Dexters is the longest established herd of Dexter Cattle in Scotland. The breed is the smallest British cattle breed and despite its small size is an efficient producer of both beef and milk. We produce quality breeding stock and have supplied breeding stock the length and breadth of Britain, exported to Ireland and Germany. Quality beef is supplied from our naturally reared grass fed stock and enquiries are welcome.
Edinbeg farm is based near Port Bannatyne behind Kames castle and on the road to Wester Kames castle. We are predominantly a livestock farm with 60 acres of arable. On the land we have a hill flock of Scottish Blackface sheep that graze our Heather hills and a lowland flock of Highlander ewes that have been fed solely from grass. There is also a heard of Saler cattle studded by the Charolais bull.
We are a working farm, with self-catering accommodation and breeders of both Border Collies and Novia Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers on Isle of Bute, Scotland. Our farm carries a herd of about 170 suckler cows, mainly “Saler cross” cows with Charolais calves at foot, and about 1,000 breeding ewes consisting of 150 Herdwicks and 850 Highlander and Aberfield Ewes. Farmed by Ian and John Dickson, the farm is producing “lamb and beef” which is sold mainly through ScotBeef to supply Marks & Spencers as well as our local butcher R. H. McIntyre, Rothesay and ButeKitchen.
